Capitol/Apple appears to have dropped the numbers in early 1971. There are a few 1971 copies of the album that have the "Mfd. by Apple" slogan on the SLICED side, but these are quite scarce. They seem to have come right around the time that the numbers were dropped. At the same time, Capitol reversed the manufacture of the slicks -- putting the larger slick on the outside.

In 1974, Capitol replaced the embossed covers with simple, gray, printed words.

Almost every copy of the album in an embossed cover should have an Apple label with "Mfd. by Apple" on the front (full) side. Since each factory ran out of covers at different times, one may occasionally find late copies of labels with the Capitol logo being found with the un-numbered covers. I have seen a copy from Los Angeles with "rights" print and an embossed cover, but the "rights" copies that I have seen from the other plants have had printed-on text.

There should be no copies of orange-label Capitol LP's with the embossed covers, or at least I have never seen one. Jacksonville and Winchester were clearly using covers with printed text by that time, and I have seen LA copies only with the printed text covers.

Frank, which plant(s) would have manufactured the 1971 copies with Mfd. by Apple on the sliced side?

I have seen a Winchester from '71, and I have seen a Winchester from '74.
Scranton ('71) is also known, and Jacksonville is possible but not known. Since these COULD have been started as early as late 1970, I usually refer to them as 1970 or '71, but it would have happened late in 1970, if it did.

By sheer coincidence, you JUST MISSED a Scranton copy with Mfd. by Apple on the sliced side:http://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-BEATLES-WHITE-...=p2047675.l2557

Frank, among the plants that manufactured sliced side Mfg. By Apple, which would be the most difficult to find?

Probably THAT one!

And here's why...
* Jacksonville was doing strange things in 1970 with their labels. The releases that came out on the Capitol logo label originally (Live Peace, McCartney, Magic Christian Music) also exist with Mfd. on the B-side. Jacksonville wound up having plenty of unused labels with the Capitol logo, so why they randomly used the other label is unclear.

* LA did not run out of Capitol logo labels until after the whole catalog was switched to Apple in May, 1971. Since Jax and LA still had those labels, they used them all up at the start of their run.

* Winchester had a few "stray" Capitol logo labels left (forgotten) somewhere, and they found them later and used them, but by and large they were out of them while they were using numbered White Album covers. This was when Winchester was first told to press the album, since they weren't pressing it in '68 or '69.

* Scranton ran out of Capitol logo labels first. As each album went from "main catalog" status to "back catalog," Scranton was pulled off of it. For example, Scranton pressed NO reissues of any Beatles album on the green label (1969-71) or the red label (1971 only), and they pressed no reissues on Apple during the time they were still a pressing plant for Capitol (1971-c. 1973). They pressed NEW Apple albums through Wild Life in 1971, but they weren't pressing every album or every single at that time. Most of their duties had been given to Winchester. Whenever the White Album was designated as "back catalog" (during or prior to May, 1971), Scranton would have been pulled off of it. Scranton was pressing fewer LP's than Winchester at that time, so Scranton copies should be scarcer.

I can't tell the label origin by the seller's pictures. I will report that fact when I receive the album.

It looks like a slick (semi-glossy) label, which would tend to mean it's from Scranton.
In 1970, Scranton was using slick labels, and the other factories were using flat labels.
Unless one of them got a label they shouldn't have!

Frank, I received the White Album today. It is a Winchester pressing.
Here are the matrix letters/numbers:

Side 1 SWBO-1-101 A71 #2
Side 2 SWBO-2-101 A70 #5
Side 3 SWBO-3-101 A75 #2
Side 4 SWBO-4-101 A68 #3

The BEATLES is embossed on the front cover without numbers below.

Oh, I was hoping it was a Scranton.
BUT...

With those high numbers you probably have the 1973-74 pressing.

Can you scan the front (full) side of one of the labels? A decent phone/photo should do.
