From 1964 to 1965, Capitol Records changed the sound of the Beatles mixes by adding reverb and beefing up the bass, among other things. Now these changes might not interest a lot of collectors, but they are certainly of interest to me, and I am trying to make sure my collection of these releases is complete. My question is, does anybody know if Capitol kept these tinkerings up from 1966 onward? For example, is Capitol's stereo Revolver different to EMI's stereo Revolver? To be clear, I understand that these tinkerings are not regarded as proper mix variations, where left and right differ, etc, but they are still an altered presentation of the Beatles sound, and were released unto the public during the 60s, which makes them important in my opinion. So, does anyone know if Capitol messed with things from Revolver onwards? Thanks! Steve |

The 1965 contract basically prevented it, but some copies of Rubber Soul appear to have some extra reverb on them. Capitol could rechannel mono into stereo, and they could EQ a record, but that was about it. In 1968 they tried adding compression and limiting to the White Album, but George Harrison personally disapproved and had the early stampers destroyed. |
