I am awaiting arrival of The Beatles First on the U.K. Polydor label 236 201. This is a Stereo example issued I believe in 1967. The record cover shows the title printed horizontally inside a capsule shaped image. From what I can tell the labels have the ST 33 letters/numbers to the right. The seller advertised this item at Mint- on the record and Excellent on the cover. I would appreciate further information on this example. |

i am not big on detail on these pressings but polydor re-released it on contour in 1971 but the polydor 67 press with very 60's style sleeve had only one as far as i know. But i am happy to be corrected especially if the mono label stereo's are rarer lol !!! |

This one has STEREO printed on the labels and sleeve. With some minor differences it is not unlike the MONO label version. |

There are two mono labels -- one with "M.C.P.S." and another with "MCPS." There is also one stereo label with MCPS. The first (?) back cover has Polydor Special and a small black bar with "Stereo also playable mono" above the catalog number. The song titles on the back cover indicate THE BEATLES and the vocalist by every song on which the Beatles sang. The second (?) back cover has Polydor Special and a small black bar with "Stereo also playable mono" above the catalog number. It also has has THE BEATLES removed, but the other text remains. The third (?) cover has Polydor Special, then the catalog number and STEREO, and a large block of text regarding the compatibility of stereo and mono. The song title listings have THE BEATLES removed, but the other text remains. |

If your cover mentions the Beatles, it will mention them on every track on which they play. E.g., THE BEATLES with Tony Sheridan, vocal If not, it has blank spaces (indentation) where THE BEATLES used to be. E.g., _____________ with Tony Sheridan, vocal [I used ____ for blank space because the forum wouldn't display simple blanks.] This one has blank spaces and the long "stereo" blurb: http://www.ebay.com/itm/THE-BEATLES-The-Be...=p2047675.l2557 This one has THE BEATLES and the short black bar: http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-BEATLES-First-...=p2047675.l2557 I remember seeing one (on discogs, maybe) having the short black bar without THE BEATLES. It's in Frank and Bruce Spizer's book Beatles For Sale On Parlophone, p. 345f. (Edit: Oops, I'm late, didn't see the new posts on time. Anyway, I'll leave it as is.) Apparently, there are more variations. The first pressing is said to have had the mono label, with the 33 in a triangle (stood on its head) and an M at the base of the triangle. That makes sense because the first batch of labels can have been printed before the records were cut, and the decision for stereo came on short notice. The next labels have the ST and 33 in two overlapping circles, the usual stereo symbol. The back covers can be laminated or not and, as Frank just said, they can have the stereo, also playable mono text or the longer text saying 'If in doubt consult your dealer' that we know from Parlophone and other labels. And it can have 'Beatles' under the titles of the songs played by them -- or not, and apparently all of these can appear in combination with all others. It's my guess, however, that the covers that have 'Beatles' under those 8 songs came first, because the remaining print ('vocal John Lennon'; 'with Tony Sheridan, vocal' etc.) remains exactly where it was before (so the blank spaces simply replace the words 'The Beatles'). This is most conspicuous for 'Cry For A Shadow' because now there's a whole line left empty under the song title. The rest of the print was not adjusted, the words 'The Beatles' were simply removed. |

There's another cover (corrected, with THE BEATLES restored), but I haven't seen one online lately. |

Bruce and I were not sure. Some people list it as a "second pressing." All of the other early records in the 236201+ series have mono labels, even though they have "stereo also playable mono" on the back cover. Just looking at some labels of Polydor Special LP's, it appears that M.C.P.S. was traded for MCPS in late 1967. It also looks like the "long stereo disclaimer" came about in late 1968. Based on available labels for other LP's, I suspect that the stereo labels weren't being used until 1968. |

I have received and inspected my U.K. Polydor Stereo copy of The Beatles' First. It has all the Beatles credits on the labels but NOT the back cover. MCPS is without periods. 236201 is in the run out followed by a scratched out portion. Side A A1 Side B B 1. The front cover is laminated. The back is not. The upper right corner shows the stereo disclaimer. The cover is an E. J. Day production. The record is housed in the date appropriate U.K. inner sleeve. |
