Some EP basics from the archives...

1. EP covers made before the mid-1970's were laminated. Covers made after that time are not laminated.

2. Earlier EP covers from the 1960's have rounded corners on the "flaps." If your EP cover has sharp corners, though, that doesn't mean it's not original. All of the EP's from 1963 had rounded flaps originally.
The Long Tall Sally EP also has rounded flaps.
The earliest copies of the first (blue cover) Hard Day's Night EP also had rounded flaps, but this one may be found either way on a first pressing.
Even though HDN 2 (red cover) came out the same day, I haven't ever seen it with rounded flaps; my copy has sharp corners.
What I believe is that near the end of 1964, more than one company started printing the EP covers for Parlophone. The second company used sharp corners, so from late 1964 on, you can find both configurations.
Later EP's from the 1970's, though, seem to have NO corner on the flaps at the mouth of the cover. That is, the flap goes all the way to the cover's mouth.

3. First issues of the red cover Hard Day's Night EP open from the side like all other EP's. Later issues open from the top.

4. First issues of the Magical Mystery Tour EP have the lyric insert in blue. This lyric insert was changed in the 1970's to yellow paper...

Another poster added...

In the main first press covers did have rounded flip backs, however there are exceptions:

I have only seen G&L HDN 2 with angled/straight flip backs.

First press HDN 1 was also available with this style again printed by G&L and with rounded corners printed by EJD.

BuPr printed copies of first press The Beatles Hits and Beatles No. 1 both with angled/straight flip backs.

First press Nowhere Man and Million Sellers were also available with both styles.

Cheers...

a couple of other additions.

In mid-late 64 the sleeves got notched entrances, so you can get some notched sleeves pre-AHDN with original discs but this would still indicate a later issue but most notched pre ahdn's will come with later discs anyway.

around 1970/72 there ares some short lived sleeves with NO FLIPBACKS, i am in the process of collecting these and have found them so far on several issues but it is too early to say if they exist for ALL the EP's...but they certainly exist for most

around 1972/3 the the angled flips lose the angles at the entrance side and are straight cut there

There are also mauve lyric inners for MMT ( early 70's only ) and orange ones too but these may be printing hue variations of the blue and yellow.
