Hi all, I saw this and thought it was pretty interesting. http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Grandes-Exitos-P...#ht_2059wt_1136 It's a United Artists EP from Spain, featuring the main themes to four UA movies, including AHDN. It's a cover version by Al Caiola, about whom I know absolutely nothing. This raises an interesting question: why are all the UA singles and EPs from the movie cover versions? There this EP, the US EP, and I've also seen a Swedish single. I assume there are others. The general consensus is that UA made the movie primarily so it would have rights to the songs. UA sold a ton of the soundtrack LPs in Canada and the US. After going to all that trouble, and succeeding so well with the soundtrack LPs, why didn't they use original versions by the Beatles for the EPs and singles? The only explanation that makes any sense is that the contract with the Beatles and/or EMI permitted only cover versions to be used on EPs and singles. Does anybody have more information about this? |

UA's contract, made before the Beatles connected up with Capitol in the USA, called for UA to release soundtrack ALBUMS. Once Capitol became involved, they made sure that UA was limited to providing exactly what was specified in the contract -- and nothing more. |

I'm assuming that UA's contract also limited sales to the US and Canada. I have this nagging recollection that the UA version was used somewhere else, although it was issued as an Odeon or Parlophone LP, not UA. I'll try to confirm this later. |
