Perhaps all this is dealt with in the past, but new to me. I just bought 1969 Help! -single, which has, however, SIUK in the middle. This is undoubtedly the 1969-1971 pressing as the record edges are sharp, the weight is lower than the original and the center hole is surrounded by an extra circle (or collar). In addition, now I have a single, Lady Madonna with the same kind of label error. Do you have any further information on these 1969 wrongly labelled singles? How about We Can Work It Out, Paperback Writer, Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Fields, All You Need Is Love? Any 1969 pressings of them with SIUK? Mothers/stampers are 11ROR and 16ROD, so very late pressing... Posted Image Posted Image |

Yep... Here's mine, posted a while back. Does yours have a Gramophone rim on side 2 (I'm Down) like mine? I would be interested to know. The general consensus was that these were probably old labels used on newer vinyl pressings although it is unusual to find them on such late releases. I suppose there is the possibility the older text layout & design was used on newly printed labels, but I doubt it. Posted Image Oh, forgot to mention the differences in font style on each side. |

Thanks chef! A & B-sides of mine are same style with Parlophone rim. Yours is even much more interesting with second label Gramophone rim! Posted Image |

Still nice though. Iv'e thought of an alternative reason for why they placed old labels on more recent pressings. It's just a theory but just as valid as all the others I've heard. Perhaps they weren't using up old labels. It's reasonable to suggest that they ran out of the newer appropriate ones and scavenged the older ones to complete the run. My copy with the first and second labels certainly might give credence to this. Anyway, just another theory tossed into the melting pot! |

Yes Henry, I remember the dates were discussed on a previous thread. The 'polo' ring copies I have all come from around 1972 onwards including those from the 1976 World Records box sets. One thing to note. I've found a few anomalies with these later pressings (not related) to this discussion). It's apparent that less care was taken with the manufacture of these polo discs. I've found some with mismatched or off centre labels, some with no labels at all, and badly trimmed vinyl edges. I've even seen a copy of 'Teenage' by The UK Subs (British punk band) in pink vinyl with a Beatles 'This Boy' EMI label on !the B side! |

Spot On !!! I was an anal kid and thats why i am sure of my dates, i noticed with dismay the arrival of these pressings in 1972, they were horrible, they could come with bag rash and the sharp edges were often scuffed from new, and the play quality was far worse, they were terrible for wooshing something you never got on the old pressings. However they were not as bad as those injection moulded pressings which polygram started to introduce in 1971, they are the worst of the lot for play quality. BTW there is another version of these singles without polo rings but with the sharp edges, it seems this variation may have been restricted to one stamping machine used mainly for demo's and for some limited runs. There are several Beatles re-issue singles like this and almost every EMI demo up until the mid 70's....some fac samples too... |
