I've recently come across a test pressing which would seem to indicate that the Magical Mystery Tour double EP was originally intended to be a 6-track single EP. The pressing I have contains I Am The Walrus, Fool On The Hill & Your Mother Should Know, all on one side on a 45rpm 7" EP. Labels are white with titles handwritten, together with a total duration (9'). Unsurprisingly, given the amount of music crammed onto the vinyl, the sound is pretty thin, but it was loud enough to indicate that the version of Walrus is the take with the extra bar in the middle section, which would perhaps indicate this as an early trial run for an abandoned product. Matrix number is MTT 10918-1 (note MTT, *not* MMT, which would make more sense). I've never come across MTT as an EMI matrix code, but it's definitely an EMI pressing, as I hope you'll be able to tell from the attached photos; there's even a KT tax code around the centre hole. Anyway, has anyone seen anything like this before? Somewhere there may be a 1-sided test pressing with MMT, Blue Jay Way & Flying...? Posted ImagePosted Image |

Was the initial idea not a 7" long playing record, 33 1/3. |

There are other series of matrices. I've seen "DEP" on some early ones. But if the record plays at 45 RPM, my guess is that "MTT" indicates a test-pressing-only series: something that was never intended (at the time) for a commercial release. I have some questions concerning the time when this may have been made. 1. Does "Fool on the Hill" consist of the standard mix? If so, the record was made after October 25th (1967). If that's the case, then the edit of "I am the Walrus" likely was NOT done on the remix date of September 29th given in Lewisohn. 2. "Your Mother Should Know" received its final mix on October 2nd. 3. Officially, Walrus was last mixed for mono on September 29th. |

Both "Fool On The Hill" & "Your Mother Should Know" seem to be the standard mixes (unbelievably, I don't have a mono MMT to compare with, so I can't be sure). Either way, they appear not to be radically different from the released versions. |

Beatles (Monthly) Book reported in the November, 1967, that there were still several format considerations being made. It looks as though your EP is one of them. There were seven songs in the package, and the most popular idea seemed to be "an EP and a single." Apparently after testing the single EP, it proved to be impossible without some loss in sound quality. That's a very interesting and historical pressing. |

It was advertised in Record Collector a couple of issues back. Details were sketchy, but after a phone call to the seller (& receiving a jpeg of the label from him) I though it was worth taking a punt on. Can't remember the last time I bought a record from the RC classifieds! Won't tell how much it cost... |
