Tribute Bands; the name evokes amateurism but should it

I'm booked to see Yes at the Royal Albert Hall next spring. The guys must be getting on a bit but I'm sure they'll give a great performance (looking forward to it).

Anyhoo the point I'm making is that a lot of bands of that era (Beatles included) are becoming too old to play - Nick Mason is on record for saying he couldn't keep up with the younger guys which is a fair comment. There are quite a few 'tribute' acts around but is this a misnomer?

'Tribute band' to me has connotations with amateurishness and starstruckness (if that's a word), Elvis impersonators are widely ridiculed.

Is there such a band as an 'official tribute act' and if not should there be? Pink Floyd have two - Brit Floyd and The Australian PF both of which command high prices for their shows. I know in the US, Grateful Dead have various spinoff bands of high quality and of course there are a few Beatles bands (and one still doing a very successful season in the West End, London).

There has to be a name other than 'tribute' for serious-minded, professional bands which have taken the baton (so to speak) from famous bands who no longer have the stamina to reproduce, re-interpret or even add to their work. You wouldn't call the London Philharmonic a tribute to Beethoven!
