It was 50 years ago today (Feb 11th) which was a Monday as well! that The Beatles spent a marathon recording session of 10 tracks finishing off the LP that was 'Please Please Me'. Amazing!! BBc Radio 2 is doing a day at Abbey Road studio with various acts recreating the songs from the LP in a day! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p014q0lb/live The greatest debut LP ever? I would think so. |

it probably isn't but its the most important debut LP bar none...only never mind the bollocks maybe could challange it which would then probably be the second most important debut bar none other acts have recorded better debuts and then done little else, Defo maybe has to be one of the best debuts ever and it was downhill from there, dexys first LP is sensational but they never matched it in my opinion |

It has to be noted that the covers on this historic lp are actually more famous because of the Beatles themselves. Yes, a great debut album! |

Henry, I'm just wondering, is that your true opinion of the Beatles? |

I think Henry is refurring to the debut album by Oasis called Definately Maybe. There's some amazing debut albums worthy of a mention IMO...Maybe a top ten list compilation to start a new topic?! :) |

And on the 18th of this month here in Canada, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary release of Love Me Do, the first Beatles' single in North America (not counting the earlier released, My Bonnie, which was credited to Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers). A&R man at the time, Paul White, was interviewed this week by the Toronto Star - the article will appear on Monday, the 18th - and CBC radio has a special also planned. Canadian release information here... http://www.capitol6000.com/index.html |

I can't think of any off the top of my head where the first LP was amazing and never to be approached again (I don't count one-offs like Layla). One hit wonders generally don't have the chops to sustain it for an entire album, or else they would have strong follow-up efforts (barring occupational hazards like addiction, plane crashes, breakups, etc). There are others, however, where the first LP was as strong as anything else they ever did. Elvis Costello, Velvet Underground, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin come to mind. I certainly can't think of any other debut album that ended up as consequential to popular music and popular culture as PPM. |

I would say Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. For me it was all downhill from there and I regard it as probably the best psychedelic (debut) album ever. |

On BBC i Player (If you can get it) you can see the hour long programme about last Monday when various artistes went into Abbey Road at about the same time that the Beatles were recording each song in their marathon 12 hour session. Mick Hucknall does 'Anna, go to him' and I am Kloot doing a very spooky version of 'Chains' are 2 highlights. BTW I think 'There's A Place' is Lennon's first great song! here is the link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01qn...king_a_Classic/ |
