OMG YOUR RIGHT

A SIDE HAS R4949
B SIDE HAS R4714

MAKES IT EVEN RARER LOL

I saw the wrong catalogue number and didn't flip it to check the other side  I just thought that they'd changed the catalogue number as well as the fonts and everything!

HMV Recod Shop in Liverpool put the withdrawn/defective single on sale in their branch this morning.

A limit of 3 per customer was imposed and they had hundreds on the shelf for sale.

Not sure if they were on sale in the other branches across the UK but no doubt others can let us know.

Are they on public sale anywhere else?

Regards to all

Phoned two large Glasgow branches and was told they were being recalled due to a manufacturing fault. Guys both said they were not able to sell them despite me telling them that other stores were...

Update.

Phoned all HMV stores in my part of the west of Scotland - ten or so. All of them informed me that although stock came in they were told not to display and to return to EMI. I thought I had cracked it when the girl at one put two aside for me. Alas when I got there a total jobsworth of a manager tod me I couldn't have them. He also told me that no store in the UK had sold any despite me telling him about Liverpool...

IIRC, when they were preparing the 1982 anniversary vinyl it was discovered then that the master had been lost, and the single was "re-mastered"from a stone mint copy of the original single. That enabled EMI to issue the 12" with both versions.

Actually, the master for the single version was probably destroyed much earlier than that, and EMI had done it somewhat intentionally. For that reason, Capitol had to do a needledrop for the 1980 release of Rarities.

The single was not being pressed at all between 1964 and 1976. When it came back into print in 1976, the "White" version was used instead of the "Ringo" version. Certainly they knew then that they had destroyed the single master. Some people have speculated that Parlophone did not want to be confused by two finished versions of the song. If it was destroyed early enough, though, they may have simply wanted to reuse tapes and erred by destroying the master and not just the session tapes.

I bit like the tapes being lost for She loves you, save for the final mono mix, prohibiting a true stereo mix on oldies and later for I'll get you. ( although the Capitol duophonic stereo treatment was far superior to the pathetic UK fake stereo imho which i hate grrrrrrrr....)
