I always thought that the Beatles Apple singles (and the Badfinger/Hopkin etc), pre-1970 came with Glossy bags. however a friend of mine remembers buying Ballad of J&Y in a Matte sleeve. Now, it seems to me that second hand glossy Apple bags are getting harder to find. As I'm about to list a handful of Apple singles with Matte bags on ebay, but I'm loath to part with the bags if they are appropriate for my UK Beatles singles. Yokono's site suggests a split between both (including the Matte BOJ&Y). Words of wisdom please? AH |

Well, our (inner) sleeve guru is the Muffmaster, but I think this site has it reasonably spot on: http://45-sleeves.com/ |

I'd like to find out about this as well. I often wonder if any of the early solo singles were still using glossy sleeves. Although most came with picture covers, I seem to recall seeing ebay listings for 'Cold Turkey' and even 'It Don't Come Easy' with glossy Apple sleeves. Another Day wasn't issued in a picture cover, but I have only seen that in a matte sleeve. Otherwise, I thought the glossy sleeves might have faded out around the time "sold in uk" was removed from the label, ie. 'Give Peace A Chance' and 'Ballad Of John & Yoko'. Also, what about the status of 'Something' as well. Glossy or Matte? |

yes indeed the cut off is around 1969/70, so after 70 matt bag is used up until 1973, after that plain white The earliest glossy's have wavy tops but these continue alongside the straight top glossy's up until around Ballad.... You can find Ballads without SIUK text in a Matt bag.... |

Any opinion on Something/Come Together. Glossy, matte or issued in either? |

Also, remember that a LOT of Beatles singles were kept in print in their (more or less) original state until the reissues in the green covers in 1976. So, you can find any of those Apple singles in wavy top or straight top glossy or matte covers (unless of course they have the Sold In UK print, which dates them to before June (?) 1969, so they should be in glossies). |

Have to disagree with that, yes they were in continuous print but the bags changed, ( as did some of the labels ) so from 1970 matt bags then 1973 plain white Something is defo glossy..... |

Initial Apple sleeves are the semi-shiny with wavy cut. Something was issued in high gloss (lip on reverse). Something, Ballad, etc, with the matte sleeves are 1970 / 1971 pressings, having the 4 prong centers. You can observe that the green labels have a slightly duller appearance than the pre 1970 pressings. The pre 1970 Lennon/ Oh No! singles were in Picture covers. These were standard fayre, and not limited to the first x number. |

Well, that was what I was trying to say. Every 'repressing' will have its own type of Apple bag. Obviously the original pressings will be in the wavy shiny bags and repressings in straight tops and matt (and subsequently white) bags. I think in general you could say that the wavy shiny bags were the original ones used from 1968 until sometime in 1969, when they were being replaced by straight top shiny ones. The matte ones came around 1970 and after sometime in 1973 the white bags. |
