Do others consider the songs Lennon/McCartney gave away as Beatles singles by default or not?

Obviously, they're not really Beatles singles, but the fact that we cannot get the Beatles own versions of the songs makes them very much part of my Beatles singles collection.

Today I traded ten albums (all total crap imho) for a selection of Billy J, Fourmost, Badfinger and Peter and Gordon singles (Plus a long tall sally EP).

Me personally no, as they didn't release them.

Perhaps I should re-phrase the question. Do collectors consider these singles disposable, or an integral part of their Beatles collection?

Now it's clearer....me no, because it wasn't released, I repeat, by the Beatles themselves, but it's always nice to have something connected to Lennon/McCartney....

So, my answer is Yes&No. ;)

OK, are we expanding this to records a Beatle played on, Paul first attempt at the piano was backing Cilla, Wings on the Country Hams and Scaffold numbers, must be a lot more out there. :D  :D

For me, the Country Hams single counts. Thrillington counts (even though Paul doesn't play on it at all). The soundtrack to The Family Way counts.

However, when a (former) Beatle plays on someone else's record, that doesn't count. E.g., George plays on several non-Apple, non-Dark-Horse records -- such as John's appearances on Harry Nilsson's tracks (even Pussy Cats, which pictures John on the cover); George's appearances with Mick Fleetwood, Gary Brooker, etc..

I like it when there's a song out there that was given away to another artist, but I think of those as secondary. For example, Paul wrote "Goodbye." He plays several instruments on the song as well. That's in a higher class than, say, the Rolling Stones' version of "I Wanna Be Your Man," on which no Beatle plays. [For those without stellar memories, I remind you that John and Paul finished it for the Stones and gave it to them before deciding to have Ringo sing it.] I own, for example, the Everly Brothers' "On the Wings of a Nightingale." Paul wrote it, and I like it, but the participation is not at the same level as "Sour Milk Sea," which is practically a Beatles song.

Speaking of which...
Is it a Beatles song only if they called it that?
For example, there were more Beatles playing and singing on Ringo's "I'm the Greatest" -- which John wrote -- than there were on "the Ballad of John and Yoko" or "Yesterday."

Hmm....Thought for food.

I prefer to collect the 'songs they gave away' to the non-Beatle/solo Apple releases to be honest. They make a nice little sub-genre :)

I also collect the odd cover version or two that have Beatle connections over & above the writing credit. (The Silkie's You've Got To Hide Your Love Away was produced by John & Paul, IIRC.)

Good point - I agree. Free As A Bird fits into this argument somewhere, too. I'm just not sure where.

Good food for thought !
Macca released a song called Plastic Beetle on the Liverpool Sound Collage CD, credited to the Beatles. I do not count it as a Beatles song though. Free as a bird and Real love do not have the same status as a Beatles song for me as any of the '62-'70 songs.

Me too I consider Beatles' songs those released by the band itself during the period 62 - 70....

And I believe that looking for other Beatles' credits or other songs for other artists is going to be a bit long....

Yes thats my view also....

at a stretch I would also collect the Gripweed single if I could find it at an acceptable price ( a fiver lol ) and that has NO Beatle connection other than I understand a few Lennon grunts here and there....

What about Seaside Woman ?

Collecting records the second time around, I'm being more selective. So, no space for vinyl versions of records with Beatles guesting on, but space for those early Beatles songs that they didn't record , Like the Billy J and Fourmost singles.

Good luck finding Tip Of My Tongue by Tommy Quickly - it's a bit difficult to find and always seems to go for silly money. :)
