For me the main difference is that VG is acceptable for some records (but not for the majority), while G is a category I ignore in 99.9% of cases.

Absolutely, and VG has a chance of cleaning up, G does not

As my budget collection shows, I don't ignore anything. There are the remastered cds if I want click and pop free listening. As a label collector primarily, as long as there is at least one decent copy of any lp or single in my collection to play the others can just be playable to be kept. As I'm sure I've said before, the prices I pay mean that I can afford to have twenty variants of, say, She loves you. I have a number of discs that jump, but being label variants they are kept. I don't go out my way to replace them, only doing so when another bargain replacement comes along. As mentioned earlier in this thread, striving for a completely stone mint collection is not only nigh impossible but damned expensive too. I think we have to be realists here and not Vinyl/Hi-Fi snobs! No disrespect intended to any of our members here, (we all have our own way of enjoying our collections) but if we refuse to accept anything less than excellent, then potentially we are missing out. For me it's more about the artwork, labels etc than the sound, as there are plenty of examples of crystal clear music to listen to without it having to grieve you that your gold label has some clicks and pops. And yes, I do accept that there are some discs that are so trashed that they're not worth keeping no matter how rare they are.

I dunno about that. I usually restrict myself to Ex or better, unless it truly is a rarity. It means that I have the odd dog in my collection - but I know they're there and they do tend to nag at me from the vault :)

I have a stereo PPM with small 33 1/3 on the label, generally Ex- all round, but it has a small edge warp - and it kills me knowing it's there. I've almost got rid of it a number of times; I even considered donating it to the local charity shop because of its condition.

OCD? Probably :D

The majority of my collection is VG to EX I'd say. I can't afford anything more and I like to play my vinyl, so wouldn't fancy much less. However, there are some that I have that are around a Good plus grade just because they are rare.

I've been looking for a bargain 606-1 for a good while now, and if i found one in even a 'G' grade I'd keep it. As the Admiral says, I have everything either on CD or MP3 if I want a high standard of listening. There is so much more to consider with labels & sleeve variants etc

Thats me too I'm afraid, I'll go further, I'll always prefer a better looker than a better player, as has been also said if you want top players there are usually cheaper alternative later pressings ( pre 74 ) that do the biz although i do play my records from time to time and obvioulsy prefer both top lookers and top players, but looks trumps play....

Further still, I value the qaulity of the sleeves, the sleeve is the hardest to thing to find in EX or better.

hOWEVER budget is still a big issue, I tell myself I can only justify spending big bucks if its an upgrade and i've a chance to re-coup - or increase that with selling the seconds...however a few recent big bucks purchases have been parked meaning to list when i get around to it...in the meantime they can join the collection ....as i doubt i'll ever get around to listing them ( the export something new and parlophone WA fell into that catagory hehehe !! )

OCD..........DEFINATELY !!!

Same with me. A scratch on my car ?: who cares, it's just a vehicle. But that record in only G-/F+ condition, the one with warp or the one with a name written on the label will always stick in your mind. As if they leave a scratch in some centre in your brain :-). That's why I mostly ignore them. On the other hand, I refuse to pay excessive amounts for stone mints.
