Thank You Girl On Veejay

To my knowledge there are 3 different mixes for 'Thank You Girl' that were released during the 1960s. The first is the mono mix released in the UK. This was also given to VeeJay for their single release.

The second is the stereo mix, given to Capitol in early 64, who then proceeded to muck with it and create their own stereo version, which they also reduced down to mono. As a result, both of Capitol's mono and stereo versions feature the extra harmonica fills.

Here's my problem:

Remember the BEATCD series of bootlegs? The one's that featured all the mix variations from around the world, starting with Capitol's? Well, on their volume 14 - 'Introducing The Beatles' (a title originally released by VeeJay), it features as bonus tracks the original single release of 'From Me To You' with 'Thank You Girl' as a B-side...but it is not in mono!! In fact, it sounds very much like Capitol's stereo version, only not quite as loud, and with the bass a little more centered.

Does anyone know what this mix is? I can find no information that supports it's existence. My first guess is that BEATCD cheated and it is merely a copy of Capitol's version, but there are slight differences in the mix that kind of rule this out. Can anyone help?

Hello! As far as the BEAT CDs, the mix of Thank You Girl WAS the Capitol "Second Album" mix, perhaps "tinkered" with; nothing more. The Barrett tapes were not around yet, so there wasn't much to work with. :(

Thank you for that! Sadly, the mix variations are a rarely studied aspect of the Beatles output, and it makes it hard if you're trying to collect them all. Thanks again!

Hey, You are welcome! Thank You Girl was one of my (many) weaknesses! Being here in the U.S., my sister bought the Beatles Second Album when it was released back in April 1964, and in mono, where Thank You Girl was just the collapsed version of the "reverbed" stereo version. When I got the Vee Jay 45 version, with the harmonica fills missing, thus began my mission of searching out the different varients, which became a lifelong quest. Over the years, Thank You Girl was but one of the many variants. Again, you are very welcome. Now, back to some therapy!! :D

The mix variations id one thing that I quite like too - I think it is the thing that got me started on :hey, what else is there besides these stereo LP's".

You are most likely are aware of this:

Its what got me started on finding 'everything' oficially issued no matter how small and led me a merry chase for many years now getting them all.

Hey Easy-E, yes thank you, I've long been aware of the Brennan site. I've even emailed him recently and asked if he was still updating, but his reply was disappointing. He said he's lucky he wrote all that stuff down when he did, cos he can't remember any of it anymore. :(

Here's a book that's essential in your variation-hunting quest: 'Every Little Thing' by McCoy and McGeary...if you haven't got it already. Unfortunately this book hasn't been updated since 1990, which is why I'm hunting more information!

And to RAK1955 (and Easy-E for that matter), if you're interested in discussing mix variations, let me know!

I'm currently chasing a rare mix of 'I Want You' that was released on a Mexican EP in 1970. This mix features an early fade, rather than the abrupt end that we all know. I don't suppose either of you have that one?!

Thanks to both of you for your kind replys! Yes, I've known about the sites and books that you've mentioned. In fact, my name appears near the end of the "Every Little Thing" book. That's me, Ross Klein. I had written to the authors, concerning the US album, Beatles VI, of which I had purchased a copy of the "rainbow label 1983 reissue label" back in March, 1986. What made this particular issue rather interesting was that it played in true dedicated MONO from start to finish, even though all markings on the vinyl and labels said STEREO. Presumably all copies checked were verified as being mono. There was one more reissue, on the "New Purple" Capitol label (of which I had, naturally), and the copy I had did play stereo, but, there were reports that mono copies were out there as well. As I said in my previous post, back to some therapy! (A collector's dream? Hobbie? Nighmare? Seizure?) But I wouldn't have it any other way!!
:)

That's great to know! I'm sure I'll have lots more questions regarding mixes in the near future, so I'll hopefully get to talk to you again soon.

Thanks again!
