Well Killer, while they all look OK, the prices from what I can see (the first 3 ) are a little steep. A Technics 1600 or SL23 are mid 70's jobs and may be OK or they may be buggered. Direct drive units can still be OK or the motor may have deteriorated and the speed isnt quite right. Belt drive TT's dont have that problem but the belt may or may not be OK instead.
But be warned there's a lot of things that can go kaput with TT's that have lots of "things" on them like speed adjusting, lifters, cueing, etc.

http://www.artandtechnology.com.au/audio/technics-sl23.html

This article goes through the multitude of problems a guy had just getting a Technics 23 up and running!
I'd ask if you could hear them all plugged into something. Turn the volume right up and see if there is any electrical hum. Play a record and see if both channels are outputting.
Of course the headshell and the associated cart (which isnt on any of the models you've shown) makes a lot of difference to the sound. Are they there or is that another purchase.
The Denon one has a headshell and cart (looks like an Ortofon). It would be the first one I'd have a look at - depends on the price they want (cant quite read the sticker.
The Numark is a newer one, prob only 3-4-5 years old. It does have one advantage - it is 3 speed so if you ever have the misfortune to become addicted to 78 records as well as 60's 33's - you'll have the wherewithall to play them - with a bigger (much bigger) stylus (and mono cart but thats another story).

But check all the little do-dads that are on them, the speed, the tone arm lifter, everything.

Its good that you have a shop that has second hand TT's in it but I'd try and haggle a little on the price. I like the Denon just 'cos its all ready to go - and if it was the right price (about a hundred bucks) I'd get it.

Also go have look at ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_...-All-Categories

theres always heaps and at prices that are a little more realistic!

The first one there , the Technics SL-5 is a linear tracker - thats the go!

Here is a comprehensive list of TT's:

all of your ones are listed.

Hey Easy,

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I find it invaluable.

A few more bits of info.... all the TT's do include a new cartridge and needle. The sales clerk told me they keep them in back because people keep swiping them.

After more research I'm leaning towards the 1600. It seems about 45 over priced but if I were to tack on shipping I think 199 would be right on target if I bought it on The Bay. I will indeed take your advice and ask to see them plugged in and haggle that price down. That Denon is an 80s model I think and is priced at about 120 USD.

The 23 seems to go for about 80 USD on the bay. although this one is in great condition. But It seems the 1600 is a better all around table and more in line with pricing.

This all started because I got an original Pepper Mono and my crappy Ion USB TT wont plat the run off gibberish at the end. (this was never included in the last US bastardized LP version)

was also looking at this one:

By the way your misfortune line regarding addiction is hilarious. Project III Usb TT

Yeah the 1600 is the best out of those ones. The Project USB one is a fine TT but watch out for USB, its not the best for sound. Were you going to play it through your computer or through an amp?
Likewise if you are looking at getting a brand new TT that opens up a whole new vista of models to choose from. That $400 to $500 price range has a heap of beauties available.
This one here in Aust should be available some where in the states:

Much better - now you're talking! Only a hundred bucks more for a brand new one with everything - even 78 for when you catch that disease! AT have been around forever and also make fantastic carts - got one on my rig. (Cos this one doesnt come with one by the looks)

Just as an aside - why do you digitise your vinyl - to listen to it in the car? or to preserve the albums?

BTW all TT can output to a sound card in a computer - I wouldn't use USB at all - its good that its there but it aint the best way to transfer the sound.

You're amp will have LINE OUT somewhere - use it to connect to the 'puter - TAPE OUT for example is a line out - the signal from it, what ever the source be it TT or CD or whaterver goes via a stereo lead to the LINE IN socket on the sound card.

Thanks! It is in I have a SHURE 97xE Stylus and LOVE it. I digitize my collection for many reason. The two you mention and for when I travel, throw parties and don't want to flip a record every 25 minutes.

But when its just me I play the table. And now that it is a nice one (Yes I can hear the difference) I spin all the time!

Thanks for the USB tip. I do have that option as well as Line out and I have all the cables. But why do you advise against USB?

I read all over the shop that its problematical

http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-4282

this has a great rundown of the problems encountered.

Ive not done a USB transfer myself (just line recordings) so maybe with USB 3.0 its all OK.

And being a brand new 2011 USB TT possibly all these kinks have been ironed out?

Let us know how you go.
