Hello,

According to Danish expert Arno Guzek (in his fanzine Beatles Again # 104) Only You was the last Ringo record to be pressed in Denmark, using imported UK labels, and UK design for its picture sleeve, but thinner/softer paper than the UK edition.

I recently received what I believed to be a Danish issue of Only you. Luckily I stumbled across this forum trying to distinguish what might separate it from a UK issue.

I was a little surprised to see that you already have a thin-papered sleeve registered. The second version without a thumb tab appears to be identical to the one I got from Denmark (apart from the Danish name scribbled om my copy ;). The label on my copy has the white 'Produced by Richard Perry' credit. So is it a UK or a Danish copy? This is where my question comes in:

Scandinavian EMI records would often employ matrices identical to those used on UK records. However there would usually be no tax code inscriptions, and seldom if ever any letter codes present. (The system employed to identify different pressings; G-R-A-M etc). My copy of Only you has the number YCE-21753 on the A-side, and YCE-21754 on the B-side -- but otherwise, no markings at all.

I would be very interested to hear if this is the same way on any or all of the definite UK pressings, and whether other records sold with soft cover comes with any additional information in the run-off grooves.

Or in short: whether my particular copy should be of Danish or English origin. Will be looking forward to hear from you good people out there.

Thanks,
Norwood.

Hi Sigbjorn -

That is correct; the thin paper one is the Danish issue.
You may want to take a look at the Danish (+ UK) issues of this single on the new Apple website, it'll explain everything in detail: Apple Records Worldwide

Wow. That is impressive! So I got my question answered, and in no time at all. Thanks! The one tiny question remaining then is: is there a thin-paper UK version as well, or is a correction due in the UK discography?

I once found a UK single in a thin sleeve, but it may have been a swap. In fact, that's likely, so the thin paper sleeve will probably have to go in the UK section....
