George Martin's White Album; Choosing the tracks for a single album

As I'm sure you are all aware, George Martin once expressed the desire that The Beatles had edited the sprawling White Album down to a single album. I for one am glad that they didn't as its rambling, eclectic mix is a wondrous thing.

But, having a bit of time on my hands, I got to thinking about which tracks they might have picked had they done so. And more importantly, which they would have left off. I set myself one rule, a total of 14 tracks - as per the usual Beatles norm - and tried to retain the mix of styles and genres. So, not in any final order, here goes...

Back In The USSR
Dear Prudence
Glass Onion
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Blackbird
Julia
Yer Blues
Mother Nature's Son
Sexy Sadie
Long, Long, Long
Honey Pie
Cry Baby Cry

(I left off Revolution 1 as Revolution was issued on a single, otherwise it would have been in!)

I'm sure no-one will agree with all of my selections, so what are your alternatives?

Ooh, good topic. I have often thought about this myself, but never gone as far as writing anything down. So here goes - keeping to the original running order:

1. Back in the U.S.S.R.
2. Dear Prudence
3. Glass Onion
4. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da
5. While My Guitar Gently Weeps
6. Happiness Is a Warm Gun
7. Martha My Dear
8. I'm So Tired
9. Yer Blues
10. Mother Nature's Son
11. Sexy Sadie
12. Long, Long, Long
13. Honey Pie
14. Cry Baby Cry

Hee hee. I've just checked these against your original post - and realised I could have saved myself much typing - I've only substituted Martha My Dear and I'm So Tired for Blackbird and Julia. I have become tired of Blackbird due to a bootleg I have, on which Macca plays it about a thousand times...

I felt that I should have included Helter Skelter, because of its infamy (27-minute edits and Charles Manson etc.), but these are the 14 tracks I like the best. It was a late decision to include USSR ahead of Bungalow Bill though. Seriously.

I did also complete the list before looking at yours, most are the same but there are also some differences. I hate Ob-La-Di so that was binned, but I've included I Will, Birthday, Helter Skelter and Savoy Truffle. If it was 15 tracks I woud have included Yer Blues...

1 Back In The U.S.S.R.
2 Dear Prudence
3 Glass Onion
4 While My Guitar Gently Weeps
5 Martha My Dear
6 I'm So Tired
7 Blackbird
8 I Will
9 Julia
10 Birthday
11 Mother Nature's Son
12 Sexy Sadie
13 Helter Skelter
14 Savoy Truffle

without making a list I've always thought that side one was really tight, but side's two onwards start to get messy.

So I wouldn't change side one at all, I'd try and boil down sides 2-3-4 to just one side two, but it wouldn't be easy.....
