When scanning my discs for this thread I realised I never got round to buying the black vinyl 12" of Hey Jude.... :(

Is this a Dark - or a Light - Green Apple? The whole label is greyer but the green isn't as yellow as the later pressings (does that make sense?).

If it's Dark - then the variation is the big (P)
If it's Light - then the variation is the solid centre

Perhaps the big (P) is only found on the later pressings?

A Philips variation: the (P) 1968 is aligned with the left of the Publisher credits.

Me neither :D
I modified the post to add the stampers and as you can see they are U and R, I thought the Deccas had BUCKINGHAM so what's with the R??

For the record, my Decca press has the following stamper numbers:

Side 1: 14 U
Side 2: 13 T

The 14, 13 and T are all stamped; the U is hand etched (and looks a bit distorted).

This is what I always call the " Matt "apple label due to it's Matt finish and appears at the end of 1971 and lasts into 1973 for both singles and LP's, it is quite different to the earlier dark apple and later light apple labels - however just to confuse things some apple releases from 1972 still have the dark apple labels

According to the article here on contract pressings, Pye has these hand etched letters and Deccas hasn't, so if this is right ours are Pye pressings.

Ah - thank you for that. I was always convinced it was a dark label, but having seen it up against all of the other scans on here today, I did a complete about-turn and decided it was light. But your explanation fits perfectly - thanks :)

There are so many colour variations within the 'dark label' period - some have a distinct brown tinge, others are bottle green - do we consider these to be 'variations'? I hope not...

This is going to be messy....

Baard your Hey Jude does look like what I would call a Decca...however...

after 1965 many Pye push out pressings are almost identicle looking to Decca .....

What we used to call Pye pressings before 1965 we know believe to be Oriole which of course was absorbed by CBS...

Confused, yes me too...

As for stampers I am no expect on non EMI stampers but Baard you are right about BUCKINGHAM so it is a PYE or a Decca???
