So we have a various number of 'pressings' for each original Beatles album; followed by a bunch of 'reisssues'. Can anyone explain the essential difference(s) between the two types so that I don't talk through my @rse when the same question is asked of me. Cheers. |

The way I see it which may differ to others is the black and yellow pressings are all "original" as they were pressed in the '60's and after that reissues, so all black and silver........just a general rule really. |

It is a grey area. Basically the beatles LP's never went out of production from the 60's till the 80's or even later. As such any issue from the 70's or 80's are in my opinion just re-pressings and not really re-issues as such. However the Mono's made a re-appearance in the early 80's , these therefore really are bonafide re-issues The same apples to the singles in 1976 and the singles and eps in the 80's, although some remained in print the singles all got shiney new pic sleeves and therefore also qualify for full re-issue status in my opinion. However a standard " black and silver " 70/80's 2 box EMI LP is not a re-issue in my opinion but just a re-pressing with a new label variation. Thats the way I look at it anyway |

That's a nice mistake you made there!! ;) It IS a grey area, I suppose it's the way how anyone perceives it. In my book, anything that is NOT an original, is a reissue. So, the only original Please Please Me album is the one on the black/gold label, anything NOT on that label is a reissue............ But then, I'm totally anorak...... |

I'd say yes.... But then, who's to say what the very first label for each issue is? For PPM it's rather obvious, but for the rest..... Perhaps it's best to adopt your way of thinking, Muffmaster.... I must admit I regard anything from the standard 13-LP Beatles LP catalogue pressed after 1970 a 'reissue'. Anything pressed in the 1960s *could* be regarded as an 'original'. It is a can of worms..... |

It is indeed a can of worms, part of the reasoning why I propose my way of thinking on this is of simple practicality. Basically where there has been a break in production, or a substantial " repackaging " then it's a re-issue, otherwise it's just a re-pressing. That is my theory and it belongs to me :D - A N. Elk |
