Obi's; What exactly are they?

Hi All,

This is probably a pretty dumb question, but hopefully someone can enlighten me.

What exactly are Obi's on Japanese records. What function do they perform? Are they fixed or removable? How critical are they to the value? Is there anything else I should know about them?

Cheers!

I believe the obi which is the band around the cover to give all the information of the record in the Japanese language, it is removable which is why many jap records don't have them anymore. As to value I think some records are only worth half their value without them others a little more, and beware that some are copied especially with the quality of colour copiers nowadays, all imo.

Well said, rsinige. Especially for 1960 Beatles pressings, the OBI's are extremely hard to find and in some cases may be worth more to collectors than the record+cover. If you're really interested in Japanese Beatles pressings (1962-1988), there is a superb book by Jason Anjoorian, which has a wealth of information on OBIs, pressing variants, label styles, coloured vinyl etc.: http://www.jasonpress.com/index.htm It's also a price guide.

as servi said..the jasonpress site has been invaluable for my japanese collecting and collating......took an age to print it all off......esp at work!.....
also read an Obi was traditionally worn around the waist in Japan for whatever reason...then must have been incorporated into the record production....
i asked in a diff post about the 1/2 obi strips i have seen in photos....never seen one for sale....guess they would be too easily damaged or torn.....
Also love the mini obi's on some of the AP issue EP's....but they are not up for sale as often....got a few...but many more to find.

just as an afterthought....great obi ref at "yokono.co.uk"...if i remember correctly it traces the beatles releases right through.....
i said it was worn around the waist...it was a sash worn with a Kimono type thingy...originally called a Tasuki...meaning ribbon.....
didn't know that till i checked.
