This was my reply to a collector who came across a seller asking an excessive amount, even by the usual standards, $600.00 for a Mono Sargent Pepper's LP. As I've mentioned before elsewhere, I too have been guilty of overpaying, but when all the dust settles, I think this is how I think. ;) :D

The collectors who refuse to educate themselves, or allow their emotions to dictate their actions, are also compounding the problem, to their own detriment no less.
To many sellers, every Beatles' LP is rare. As already mentioned here, that simply is not the case. The multitude of label and sleeve variations continually show up on on a regular basis - even the Revolver and Rubber Soul mispressings are common enough. As far as I have observed, for most pressings, there still seems to be a regular supply of EX to NM copies out there as well. I'm sure other collectors have also noted this.

No one has to buy an LP that is logically overpriced, but to some, price doesn't seem to be an issue. Their desire for a particular LP takes precedent and emotion will often trump logic.
Unfortunately, the negative corollary to this fact is a perceived value shift and many conclude that the LP must now have more worth. Obviously, sellers will take advantage of this development. But in auctions where starting prices are reasonable, and final prices still end up in the extreme, there's no one to blame but the buyers.

By the way, on the other Forum, no one responded to my diatribe...

Regards...Mark

Beatlemania is alive and well but if you look around, deals are still there...

As a recent example, I obtained these for a $1.60 each (shipped)
in a bulk purchase off of craigslist. Sometimes ya get lucky...

Beatle albums are way more common than people think. Copies sold in the millions back in the 60's and today a lot of them are still around. Just today at a carboot sale I saw original mono copies of Hard Days Night and With the Beatles (They were priced at £10 and £15 respectively and in VG so I didn't get 'em).

One thing I can't stand are 'book experts' where someone reads a book and immediately declares themselves an expert in the field. I know of one person who thought he was a Beatles expert purely because he had a copy of the 2006 Rare Record Price Guide.

I still have not bought any price guides. I have seen them... recent releases, and
actually have checked some out of the library, on occasion, for grins, more
than anything.

Being retired and somewhat comfortable, I really could care less about record values, frankly. I'd rather go fishing on my boat.

I maintain that price guides are horse hockeypucks, at best... for the most part.

Excellent discography, but all those common "list prices" have convinced
2nd hand store owners, antique store owners, etc... all across the globe,
that herp alpert, barb streisand and fleetwood mac rumours have value.

Thanks. Awesome.

Add some more commons at 8 - 20 each!!

Yea, that outta do it.

Attn Price Guide publishers: Lose the used car salesmanspeak!
Black Gold? How cheesey can you possibly get?

Fire your marketing staff, fer Christs' sake, or go sell Buicks, OR
actually print a price guide without all the commons.

C'mon already. Get real. The karma points alone are worth it.
