Can anyone recommend a good replacement cartridge for my Linn Basik TT? The present one is a Linn K9 so it would have to be a MM type. |

It appears that the Audio-Technica ATN95E is a 'cheap' direct replacement if you just want to replace the stylus. Apparently, Audio Technica made the original K9. Looks a bit odd, mind: http://electronics.audiopervert.com/linn_k...replacement.htm Best thing to do it give the Musonic people a call - they were incredibly helpful to me a few years back when I tried to replace a discontinued stylus from an obsolete turntable... I have a Linn-using colleague that swears by the Linn Adikt |

Here's my new set up. - Turntable: Pro-Ject 1Xpression III with Ortofon 2M Red; - CD Player: Marantz CD 5004; - Amplifier: Marantz PM 6004; - Speakers: B&W 685. I've never heard such a wonderful and intense bass! Also, belive it or not, albums in vg. condition play like minters! |

You can replace the 2M red stylus directly with the blue. I have done it with mine and it sounds great. http://www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum...pic.php?t=35127 Upgrading is a slidy slope though and depends on so many things other than just the upgrades themselves including interconnects, compatibility with other components, accurate set-up, room acoustics etc etc... but I'm sure you know that already! my system: Pro-Ject RPM5 (SE isolation and belt upgrade) with Ortofon 2M blue. Pro-Ject speedbox2. Meridian 551 amp Meridian 506.1 24bit CD player PMC TB1 speakers on sand-filled Target stands. mostly Audioquest interconnects. |

I think I'm satisfied with the red one (though....I can't view your link it directs me to the homepage of Google....). Oh....as I've forgotten it before, I've also added the CD player I have.... I've got a few 90s albums (on very light vinyl)....for example a compilation of Joe Jackson (anyone know him?) and tracks like "It's Different For Girls", "Steppin' Out" or "Breaking Us In Two" play SuPeRbLy! Another consideration: I've played an original U.K. copy of Help! and then my 2 boxed copy from early 70s....where do you think "Yesterday" sounded better? On the 2nd copy from the 70s as clean as a perfect CD! |

just google 'ortofon 2m red vs 2m blue' but as I said, upgrading is a slippery slidy slope into spending a load of money! The Pro-Ject Expression is an excellent turntable though - I was looking at them when I got my RPM5 - they share the same carbon fibre arm I think but the Expression has a superior drive and motor assembly not to mention costing twice as much! One thing I have noticed though is the bass and detail on the 2012 boxed-set is very nice. I really like the sound. Henry has firm views on post-1960s vinyl - I must admit I agree that many have not stood the test of time (especially those produced from about 1975 onwards) but they're not disastrously bad if well-looked-after and played on a decent deck. A decent vinyl system properly set up will knock spots off any CD apart from exotic high-end devices. |

Tracks such as AILH (on a scratched U.K. copy of AHDN) and TTWI (excellent corrected matrices/uncorrected credits copy of WTB) play in a truly awesome way, despite the fact that they are acoustic tracks....not even a crackle....and it's possible to hear a lot of presence in the sound as well as to notice many details.... I've done tests with an Italian copy of "The Greatest Hits" of Simon&Garfunkel....awesome "Sounds Of Silence", when drums and double-tracked guitars get in! |

Ooops it was the Pro-Ject Xperience I was looking at not the Xpression - the Xpression is pretty much on a par with the (now unavailable) RPM5. Both fine turntables! |

Well, with a great set up you'll easily defeat scratches and too much background noise....no more skips but instead of them you'll have only loud clicks. |

I think back in the 70s and 80s the fashion was for lower and lower tracking weights which may well have done more harm than good causing skitter scratches due to the fragility of the contact with the record. Admittedly, older systems particularly mono had abnormally huge tracking weights which with a duff sapphire stylus could plough up your record collection in no time! The 2M blue sounds sharper and the bass deeper than the 2M red - but perhaps at the cost of being less forgiving on background crackle. Saying that it's only some of my poor 70s LPs which are shown up in this respect and I think it's a sacrifice worth making for the lovely detailed sound. The new Beatles vinyl set sounds absolutely stunning. |

Funnily enough it was the yearning to feel like a teenager again that rekindled my passion for collecting records after selling them about ten years ago. I told my family that I wanted one of these old fangled machines for xmas. Unfortunately they were unable to find one in budget. They bought me instead, one of these things with a USB lead. However, I quickly upgraded to a Panasonic deck. Admittedly not the best of decks, but a huge improvement in sound and build quality. My next move will probably be a Rega Planar deck. This was what I owned in my old life of collecting and will sit nicely with my Creek 4140 and Linn speakers (they're monsters and I don't know the model number). Furthermore, I bought my son two of the old decks. He has a very rare collaro autochanger (one sold on ebay for £450!!), which cost me £30. His second deck is a BSR. He has a number of 78's (Elvis/Everly Brothers). To my ears these sound remarkably good on these players, so much better than I seem to remember. The pair of us sit staring at the deck watching the records play. Great stuff! AH |
