Hi All, I wondered if any of you would care to share your thoughts on the 'best' places to get your hands on those vinyl desirables. I don't have a vast pot of money to go out, Abramovich style, and improve my squad! Therefore I am always looking to find sources of supply that won't break the bank. Here are my thoughts on the alternatives that I can think of: 1) Record Fairs - For: Generally a good selection and knowledgable dealers, and you can see what you're buying. Against: Likely to have to pay top prices. 2) Internet Auction sites - For: Again a good selection and possibility of a bargain. Against: Huge competition for anything really worthwhile, always possibility of things not being quite what they should. 3) Car Boot Sale - For: Should be cheap and you can see what you're buying. Against: I've never yet found anything!!! 4) Traditional Auction - For: If you know what you're buying you can get a bargain, you can see what you're buying. Against: You might have to buy a lot of other stuff you don't want along with the stuff you do! 5) Advert in paper - I've been thinking of trying this. Has anybody any experience of doing this? Any other ideas and comments would be very welcome. Cheers! |

The best weapon you can have when buying Beatle records is knowledge. When I used to go up to the Beatleweek festival up in Liverpool I *always* used to come back with a bargain. From what I remember... US Tollie promo single of Love Me Do / PS I Love You for £20 Sgt. Peppers Stereo widespine for £15 Sgt. Peppers Mono widespine for £20 when a dealer tried just moments before to sell me one for £90. A mono copy of the US LP 'Meet the Beatles' with no publishing credits, lovely condition, for £20. A very rare stereo Monarch contract press of the US LP 'A Hard Days Night' on UA. VG copies are worth about £200, I got this one for £30. A mono Yellow Sub at the Saturday auction for £40. The year before contract presses became a dealers sweetpoint I went around and picked up every one I could find for between £2 and £3. Only *one* dealer out of them all had picked up on the contract press singles and he was unsuccessfully trying to sell a 'Pye' pressing for £30. --- I've also found that unusual 'CBS' style oldies at a record fair for £2 and managed to nab a beautiful Decca WTB for just £6 hidden away amongst a pile of standard Beatle albums. |

Hi Mike, You are quite right, knowledge is the key. Pardon my ignorance, but is there a 'bible' out there that describes these sort of variations? I realise that that is what you are working towards with this site! |

At the moment there is no such publication. America has them with books by Perry Cox and Bruce Spizer, but there is no British equilivant. Until now that is. That is precisely what this website is for. We're doing it as a website so that as soon as a new label variation comes out it can be added instantly into the database so that it never goes out of date unlike a book. Since the VeeJay books were released in America new variations have since come to light and the book is now out of date. |

Car boot sales aren't bad at all if you get there EARLY. I've not found anything particularly rare but it's a good place to pick up 'bits and pieces' that you wouldn't likely buy at a record shop or on eBay. I've found loads of great 50s and 60s jazz LPs for a pound or so each in fantastic condition, similar age EX classical LPs in big bundles of 50+ for a fiver... Actual record shops can be good too - the MVE chain in the UK is quite good, I've picked up Beatles LPs for very good prices before although on the whole they do tend to charge over the odds for big name bands. Again, a good place to look for bits and pieces. I've found some rarities in shops for very little too. eBay really is the best place if you're looking for something rare, no question in my mind. You could spend a year finding an LP from the other sources but look on eBay and there's probably 10 of 'em. Yes you run the risk of condition not being quite as described, but as long as you bid lower than what it's worth you won't be disappointed. It just takes time and patience :) I know Mike and myself have had tremendous success using this method!! :D You just need to know exactly what to look for with as wide an area of knowledge as possible. |

I always try and get to a car boot just as it opens, but so far without any luck. On Sunday I took my 2-year old daughter to one with me and found a stall with approx 100 LP's in a couple of boxes. As I started to browse the guy greeted me and said I could have the lot for a fiver. I rummaged hopefuly through them, but even a fiver wouldn't tempt me to take home 20 Andy Williams albums plus a good selection of Shirley Bassey, Mantovani, James Last, Perry Como etc! I'm sure there was a potential profit on E-Bay, but I couldn't see how my daughter was going to lug one of the boxes to the car! :P It looks like I will have to do a bit more research and look for some E-Bay bargains. |

Last Monday I was at a carboot sale on the bank holiday. I picked up a nice original Ink Spots LP but I was coming up to one stall when someone picked up the George Harrison ATMP boxset and started looking over it really slowly. Eventually be bought it for 50p X_X |

I love discovering new second hand record shops. When I worked in Central London, the Music & Video Exchange stores in Notting Hill Gate Camden and Piccadilly were the best. In Picaddilly I would visit Reckless Records (now Revival) and Sister Ray, Vinyl Junkies,Cheapo Cheapo and On the Beat and JBs in Hanley St off Tottenham Court Road - I picked up the Christmas album in great condition. Have picked up Beatle bargains in all of these. eg a couple of days ago, I always wanted a "Past Masters! double vinyl album and got one for 11 pounds in great condition (20 dollars) - the guy said he had only put it in the rack 10 minutes ealier, so sometimes you have to be quick , or just lucky! In Camden Town there is Vinyl Addiction, an MVE and Resurrection Records Now I work in Islington, so there is Haggle Records and Flashback just down the road. Last week, with my train season ticket that lets me travel as many times as I want at no extra charge around London, I hopped on a train to Chingford to visit Record Detector a tiny little store just outside the station lots of Beatles and other stuff. |

I suppose charity shops could be added to the list. Unfortunately charity shops are getting wind of it and check every single record they get before putting it out for sale. 99% of the time they either hold the record back and sell it on eBay or overmark the price and put it up on a shelf behind the desk. One Oxfam I know of was selling a standard mono Peppers for £75! Still, went in one charity shop and picked up an early non-Rec copy of PPM for £20. |

Hey MurraytheG - what's the addresses of the ones in Islington? I'm up Angel way quite a lot. I frequently pop into the MVE in Notting Hill Gate, they usually have some good stuff upstairs. Same with the MVE in Camden, though I've not found Vinyl Addiction or Resurrection - isn't one of them mostly Dance / Techno stuff? I don't usually bother with the ones in Tottenham Court Road or round Soho anymore as they're just overpriced touristy shops. Reckless was great for rare CDs back in the 90s though... |

Hi Guys Yes, I agree about Charity shops latching on to collectable records - I read a story about the DJ John Peel leaving a lot of his valuable albums to an Oxfam shop and they knew what they had in their hands! Pacey - the Islington shops are Haggle 114 Essex Road and Flashback, just up the road at 50 Essex Road - they are both near the junction with Cross Street. I know what you mean about the Tott Road stores, but I have picked up the odd bargain there where IMHP they underpriced things - so I always look in just to check. Are you knowledgable about telling first issues from Matrix numbers - eg a US 'Meet the Beatles' with EL code H with a circle around the H (Capitol full dimensional stereo on the topin the right bottom hand corner it says RIAA - would that be a first pressing? |
