I like to make it a point to explore music from generations before me, since it all so heavily influences the music that is made today. I have a lot of respect for everything David Bowie has done. He's survived the musical scene, and been successful at the same time, for decades. I chose to review Young Americans because of the song, "Fame." I'd heard Fame probably a hundred times before I ever came upon this album just a few months ago. Thing about Fame, it doesn't sound like anything Bowie has ever done before. Funky as hell, way more than I've ever known Bowie to be. Where the hell did he learn to get that funky, I'd ask myself. There are miles of funk by funk artists who don't funk it quite like Bowie did on that song. Anyways, I have a Best Of that I pick through when I want to listen to Bowie. It's just easier, for mp3 player related purposes. I wouldn't feel as good about reviewing a Best Of, though. Maybe one day, when I am more knowledgeable in the field, I'll review an album out of his glam-rock days. So, here's my review. Young Americans is another one of Bowie's singles, sporting a very pop-y/soul sound, backed with a saxophone and some female vocals. Win slows it down, filled in largely with a guitar on flanger for a relaxing vibe. Fascination is a funky track, with some lyrics from Luther Vandross, but it's hard to believe that's the only hand he had in the track, just from how it sounds. Somebody Up There is a soul song about the divinity of a man, like you or me, who has massively positive influence on the world, a song almost fit for a church choir. Across the Universe, a Beatles cover, was made to fit the album but still pay its respect to the original. Fame. Man, what a song. It's got a beat you can strut to, and a funk/soul sound that screams for the 70's. Lennon himself did some of the guitar work on this, as well as the chanting FAME at the end. I have to give this album 7.5/10, solely on the power of tracks Fame, Fascination, and Across the Universe. The album is much more soul than one might expect, if walking into this album knowing only of Fame. That's not to say the rest of the album is bad, because even if the worst Bowie were better than say.... I dunno, the best Duran Duran, you still would go for the better sounding Bowie. And THAT isn't to say anything bad of Duran Duran. I'm just saying. 1975 "Young Americans" – 5:10 "Win" – 4:44 "Fascination" (Bowie, Luther Vandross) – 5:43 "Right" – 4:13 "Somebody Up There Likes Me" – 6:30 "Across the Universe" (John Lennon, Paul McCartney) – 4:30 "Can You Hear Me?" – 5:04 "Fame" (Bowie, Carlos Alomar, Lennon) – 4:12 |
