Adventure's Tenth Anniversary

The rest, they say, is history. In japan, they've had a concert and a new CD release, and there are rumors of continuing digimon adventures. However, it is also a day for the fans to remember why they came into digimon in the first place, their first digimon episode, etc. I know this topic has been touched on before, but it's fun to reminiscence. Post here anything you want to remember or talk about involving the first series. My first digimon episode was somewhere around Garurumons' appearance. I'd been deliberately avoiding the series, viewing it, as many others did, as a Pokemon rip-off. However, a friend who loved Pokemon eventually convinced me to watch it. Curios, I watched in alone one day after school on fox, and from then I was hooked. Digimon has had a weird effect on my life, giving me friends and helping my writing.

The only remotely dark anime I had watched were random episodes of Gigantor and Ronin Warriors along with the movie Akira. Gigantor was more nostalgic than dark, but as an anime n00blet at the time I didn't quite get it and the impression it left wasn't very strong. I didn't see enough of Ronin Warriors to actually understand any of the darker aspects, so it just left me a bit confused throughout the episodes I did see. Akira was the standard for darker "OHSHI" anime for me, but I only watched Pokemon and maybe whatever other crap was on during the Saturday morning timeslot. It was a fun adventurous romp, but it wasn't balls to the wall nor did it have any inspiring plot depth. Then they aired Digimon. Kids were thrust into an unknown world where monsters repeatedly tried to kill them and destroy the world. Things died while the heroes gained strength from hotblooded courage. It wasn't "Getter Robo: Armageddon," but its more serious plot aspects appealed to me. I thought it was awesome. Later I discovered Scryed and the mecha anime genre. Beating up women and plunging through giant space vaginas put things into perspective and made Digimon look like the child-targeted anime it was. It will still hold a special place in my heart as the most awesome Saturday morning cartoon ever...before it was time to d-d-d-d-d-duel. Like Pokemon to Digimon Adventure was Digimon Adventure to Yu-Gi-Oh. I'd like to remember the fight between Angemon and Devimon as one of the most awesome moments in animated television. But I can't because I realize how much of a copout it was. For an epic battle between the opposing forces of good and evil in a japanese cartoon, the level of action was rather tame and I now know how weak my balls were thrust into the wall. Digimon Adventure needs a 2010 remake done by a mix of people from Gravion, Gaiking and Gurren Lagann. I'd say throw in a few people from the Hokuto no Ken movies, but then it wouldn't be Digimon anymore. It'd be Manlymon, and its level of superiority over the original Digimon Adventure would be over eight thousand.

At first, I thought it was something like pokemon too. But I got curious myself when I saw it again. So I kept watching to see more about it, and it got more intersting, it wasn't about one immature kid repetitively throwing balls, fighting to be some great pokemon master. It was more mature kids, and partners whom they really made a connection with, fighting to protect something, as well as themselves. Also, pokemon were like mere animals who took orders, but Digimon were intelligent, talkative, and cooler. Sure I watched both pokemon and digimon for a while, but I became loyal to the digimon crew! And when it got to where the digimon started digivolving to ultimate level, I saw a bit of spirit behind the show that really showed how could it was. Especially during the saga of the 8th digidestened. They even had commercials that made it a bit more intense of a wait during each episode the first time it aired. After that, I was hooked.
