I'm glad Hope seems to know what's going on....

The almost identical looks of stunned gopher on their faces both amuses and confuses me. Ben has met LOTS of other ghosts by now, but apparently never met Abraham Lincoln - though he knew about him and his ... "condition." I'm guessing he was unaware that Abe had a "thing" for Hope - and that he could manifest in a skin suit.

Abe's look is a little more puzzling, though I'm guessing that he's never met Ben before. But is his look due to the hero worship he might hold Benjamin Franklin in or because of the obvious familiarity between Ben and Hope? Aside from Mr. Douglas, how many other ghosts has Abraham come across in the afterlife?

Are these two about to have a throw down over Hope? If so, I'm wondering how she'll break it up. I have every faith that she's quite capable of doing so, should it become necessary.

Actually, if I remember correctly, Abe was Ben's first Hope situation. He's pretty much responsible for Abe being the ghostly powerhouse that he is. Abe is shocked because, well, Ben (from what we've seen so far) is somewhat of a touchy subject with him, to the point of Ben being either consciously or unconsciously being kept from entering Abe's little piece of the afterlife. Ben, on the other hand, is stunned because he never expected to be able to get even remotely close to Abe ever again, and he's also the person that Ben feels he has failed the most. That's what I recall, at least.

I, uh, oh, wow. I can't BELIEVE I completely forgot that Ben was responsible for Abe's condition. Now that you've reminded me, all the comic pages from that discussion are bouncing around in my head - but I quite literally had no memory of it at all.

I know I'm getting old, but seriously? Yikes! :wtf:

OK - that changes my perception of this page completely. There's still multiple-choice interpretations, but the choices have changed completely. Ben's face ... I think he's AVOIDED Abraham for the last 150 years, and is currently in that uncomfortable position of having come face to face with his biggest guilt. He's waiting for the axe to fall.

I don't know, however, if Abraham blames Ben or not. Is he going to want to hug him or kick his face in?

Something I remember being very disturbed by earlier in the strip...

When Abe was telling Pat his future he said, "And then you die in your wife's arms, but she doesn't love you, so no harm done." Now, I'd say Hope is pretty INTENSELY in love with Pat, so what the hell...?

But it's pretty clear that Lincoln has a MAJOR "thing" about Hope. Note the single word he focuses on in Ben's comment. "Dearest."

Plus I've thought a few times about how he greeted Pat at the door to the White House with, "But where is Doctor Blackwell? We were going to wear matching hats?" (Interesting - diving into the archives I found that page and now he's saying "Where is Ms. Blackwell?" - but I DISTINCTLY remember seeing "Doctor" previously. It struck me because I didn't know who he meant for a while. And Hope wasn't a doctor, just an intern. Faulty memory? or Retcon?)

Anyway - my point was that the thing about "matching hats" was a throw-away comment from Hope earlier in the comic, though I can't remember just when. Something about Lincoln being crazy. But for Lincoln to pick up on it, was he ... monitoring the conversation? Listening in? Would that be because his name was mentioned or ... what?

That "Dearest" echoed right there. Wait. Did those two have more than a strong mentor/mentee relation?

If you read the Tumblr, you'll note that Otter finds it HILARIOUS how some people want to pair up Ben/Abe in the way you're trying to do.

Personally, I noticed that "Dearest" and felt it meant Abe was suddenly seeing Ben as competition for Hope's attentions. Doesn't make me right and you wrong, however. :) But it seems to me that Lincoln appears to be COURTING Hope - something which is going to dismay her considerably when she realizes it. (If I'm right)

There's got to be an armada of ships in that direction, I bet. But as for "something which is going to dismay her considerably when she realizes it. (If I'm right)" - as someone still freshly influenced by the Greek Key, I strongly suspect that Ms. Blackwell doesn't do "dismay". She does help things go boom, though.

Heh. I can't argue with that. I'm sure she can FEEL dismay - but she would use it as a launching pad for something else.

Remember when Amelia Earhart caused that other intern to, essentially, shoot herself in the foot. As I recall, "dismay" was just one of the feelings Hope had from that incident.
