So, Speedy is a trickster god waiting to be born? That ought to be interesting, as well as why he wouldn't want to attract the attention of the existing ones. They wouldn't like the competition. :ninja:

And to quote Hermes Conrad, that just raises further questions!

Is Speedy older than his own body by several orders of magnitude?

Does this blow the lid off the potential for supernatural shenanigans? Up until now, it was only ghosts and ghost-sensitives. Now we have two classes of nonhuman supernaturals. How many more are there?

Welcome bhoejte and Norbrook.

So ... did the experiment that "created" Speedy:

  • make him a demon?
  • attach him to a demon?
  • gave a demon a good cover story for a takeover?
  • is a B.S. cover story for something more sinister?

Other thought: She calls him trickster. That implies (to me) Coyote Trickster.
That page also includes a reference to Anansi, a trickster in the folk tales of the Ashanti people of Ghana.

I remember Otter read and recommended the The Iron Druid Chronicles (I loved them (audio version rocks! :rawk: )) which has an appearance or two from Coyote Trickster.

Food for thought.

I'm wondering if there was an experiment at all or if "Speedy" somehow fabricated records of the entire thing and just inserted himself into the world.

That's an interesting thought. I look forward to upcoming teasing details. :D

Thanks for the welcome.

How about "None of the above?" ;)

We know something about Speedy's origin, and if you add it in with other things AGAHF has said, there's another explanation. My guess is that Speedy doesn't just have somatic changes (body), but genetic ones, which are inheritable. Hence Mulcahy's comment about "My best friend has smart kids." when the story of koala joeys escaping zoos comes over the news. We also know that to a large extent, the strength of a ghost is dependent on how "famous" he or she was, and how many people today know or think of them.

If you add that up, you have Speedy, who is the progenitor of a new intelligent species, and is becoming well-known to people. He's already known to be a trickster and practical joker, often in the sense we see in stories about the various trickster gods. So if he keeps going for more years, when he dies he'd be a very powerful ghost just on his fame with humans, but add in a large number of intelligent koalas who think of him as "the father of us all" (often literally) ;) and you have a new "trickster god."

All these colours shiny.

Constructs are green
Spirits are blue

Does that make Speedy... Purple?.

Sounds good.

Speedy is known to be a linguist, which is why he's along on this mission in the first place. Hence, ancient Phoenician is probably just one of the languages he picked up in his spare time.

The ancient phoenecian is just to keep the others from listening in.

Speedy doesn't need to be supernatural to qualify as a trickster demon. He's been managing that on his own from day one. "Unborn" just means he hasn't yet revealed his full potential to anyone yet. She's referring to everyone as analogous code names, this one is just Speedy's, and it fits him perfectly.

My question is who those other names are. Susanoo, Anansi, Pan. I assume she's not talking about literal deities, so I guess those are code names for other people we'll meet later?

I'm sort of lost on this whole story arc. I'm not even sure why they're in Japan. Hope apparently wants to test some theory about ghosts, but either she can't explain what the theory actually is, or the author can't, because none of what she says makes sense. She constantly just jumps to conclusions and then acts satisfied without ever explaining the conclusion OR how she got there.

I think "unborn" means he came from a test tube, rather than his mom having given birth to him naturally. Or at all.

Googling those names takes me to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_tricksters so I'm assuming those are Speedy's competitors once he becomes a legendary trickster himself.

I don't think Hope has fully developed her theory. At this point it's more like a working hypothesis that needs more data. If there's a cultural aspect to the way ghosts interact, she needs to go somewhere where she's likely to find someone who can speak to ghosts, is willing to introduce her to some, and has a different culture. She also needs an agent to actually see the ghost if she's right about the cultural thing and the chip being able to see the wavelengths of different cultures or whatever it is. She talks a bit about it here http://agirlandherfed.com/1.1237.html

Japan's an old culture with where they respect their ancestors and have an awful lot of people in a small area. It and China are the two most likely targets, she speaks Japanese and travelled there for Judo in the past. Hope is also a little "ready, fire, aim" so it's not surprising that she's going without a fully formed, testable hypothesis. Or maybe she is and she's not been able to spell it out properly in 4-8 panels a week.

Edit: I've been rereading the strip this week and just got back to the unborn trickster demon. I think LockeZ is right. Speedy hasn't become a trickster demon yet. He does understand the rules for power in the afterlife, so he's working hard at becoming one, though.

I'm psyched that Hope has, even if a little bit, surprised Grandma Ishi "today".

Plus, more info on Auras, locality and
Hope (translated from the Japanese of course)

if she got it right, then --
more cool info to come.
