Well, the path forward seems clear to me. All that's necessary is to convince the rogue faction that what they're doing isn't in America's best interests; even if they want to continue anyway, they lose Lincoln's support.

Of course, that'd require a meeting to be arranged, which has been... difficult, so far.

I don't think they will lose Lincoln's support. Even though he knows it is wrong he gave his word. He won't go back on that.

Also, as to convincing your enemy that s/he is comepletely wrongheaded, well, ..., um, odds are generally low on that (no matter what side one is on).

(Appologies for a full contradiction (please feel free to argue your point) or for missing the point if you were in jest).

Nah, what I mean is that if the rogue faction ghosts no longer believe that they're acting in America's best interests, Lincoln's promise no longer applies, even if they'd still rather continue for selfish reasons.

Of course, like you said, I may be understating the difficulty of "convince someone their ideology is counterproductive". ;)
