So, maybe it is just me and my ridiculous penchant for goofyness, cuteness, and general smiley-things, but this comic made me bounce around like a lunatic. Especially the Hyperbole and a Half statue, because my husband and I reference that at least once a day, just because it takes a lot of effort for us to "*insert whatever* like a mother-****** adult" or "CLEAN ALL THE THINGS!" Depending on whatever is happening at the time. But seriously, I believe Otter really outdid herself with this one for two reasons: One, the art is just incredible. And two, I think that the art actually is speaking louder than the dialogue in this strip. I think, actually, that the art says a great deal about Lincoln's mental state, in that he is not "insane," he is just very damaged. (Note: If you aren't interested in my elaborated, detailed perspective, since it involves personal thoughts and feelings, please feel free to skip the rest of my post. )Speaking as someone who has battled crippling depression (and a wide variety of other WTF emotions) due to bipolar for over half her life, and has complex PTSD due to repeated childhood abuses......sometimes you break. Not in a "put me in a padded cell," or nervous breakdown way, but in a "I can not keep going on as I have and taking on all these different burdens, because if I do, I WILL go padded cell, or I will die. I need something to ground me, post haste," way. Quite a few times, we have heard that in life, Lincoln's major mental issues were depression with suicidal impulses. In my opinion, speaking from my personal experiences with my personal brand of "Crazy (I use that as a cover-all to explain my various mental issues)," the internet, with all it's humor AND madness, with all it's flame wars and it's group hugs, can be amazingly beneficial (and on other days insanely detrimental, depending) to someone with mental problems. It is by far, the ultimate escape. The ultimate DISTRACTION from your own mind. Look around Lincoln's collection. You see a lot of humor and happy. I believe (and this is just my opinion based on A) personal experience, and B) being a rabid AGAHF fangirl who has read the archives at least 3 times a year since 2008 when I discovered the comic. Yes, I am nutter butters) that Lincoln isn't truly insane at all, he is just very, very broken. His pain has crippled him in that special way that, in my opinion, only someone who has at least come very close to that edge, can understand. You aren't crazy, you aren't blind to the world, you aren't lost in your own happy go lucky little universe. But you are different. You are like a piece of glass that has been struck and is littered with millions of tiny cracks, and you are holding yourself together by sheer will and awesome. And as such, people will view you as being batshit insane because sometimes what you do will make ZERO sense, because you are holding yourself together the only way you know how: By avoiding that which can hurt, by going off seemingly in a completely different direction to steer clear of those things which may hurt. By focusing on seemingly meaningless, mindless drivel, because that drivel is your *lifeline*. It reminds you that there are smiles to be had, that not everyone wants a piece of you or is out to hurt you, and that ultimately, the world is not without joy. Don't get me wrong, in my opinion, Lincoln *DID* break in a way. He isn't as coherent as most people in this particular mental state would be, in that, at times, he will shut down and shut people out in a way that, let's be honest: Your average person can not get away with without being locked up. But then again, he is dead, and damn near omnipotent. This is why he isn't necessarily insane, but is still dangerous in that if you set him off, he may see you as a threat to what tiny, fragile peace he has, and toss you on your ass. Or worse. Not to mention: This is a comic, he is Abraham freakin' Lincoln, a ghost, and was able to see dead people in life. This adds a WHOLE other layer onto it that I, in my mere mortal, non-awesome coil can only begin to grasp at. Now, as I said, this is *my* opinion based on experience, and maybe I am reading too much into the content of Lincoln's awesomesauce gallery. But personally? I see a lot of my browsing history/bookmarks in there, and many of those things became a part of my daily language and life, because they helped distract and bring joy when the cracks started to get too big. This is just my opinion, of course, and I am sure most people do not see, at all, what I see in that room. I am really curious to hear what others *do* see in there (derp, obviously, or I wouldn't be posting in the daily thread discussion, lulz). P.S. I apologize if me talking about my own personal issues bothered anyone, but I really was not sure how to explain my thoughts and theories on the context of the room without explaining it from my personal, albeit damaged, perspective. If what I said was in any way appropriate, Mods, please hit me with the Mod hammer, and let me know how I screwed up. I know mental issues/illness (depending on your preferred term), of every variety, from "garden variety (my ass) depression," as a therapist once put it, to bipolar, borderline personality disorder, to schizophrenia, are very, very touchy subjects with some folks, and I deeply apologize if I offended or upset anyone. These things are pretty normal to me, because of the way I grew up, but I understand they make others uncomfortable, and I apologize if I did any such thing. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that since AGAHF deals heavily with these issues (in my opinion) that I didn't make anyone squicky. If I did, I'm sorry. |

I dunno, I would have defined him as insane for having a *SLENDERMAN GALLERY*. On the other hand, Lincoln on 4chan would be kind of funny. |

Hi Matdredalia, I wasn't thinking about the indivudual items. I was thinking more about it in the whole. As in Lincoln's need to feel connected. Or maybe he's trying to control things or help people. Maybe he decided he saw to much awful in the world and he was allowed to play in new "make believe" land of the internet. Maybe he was sane going in and the cat memes did him in? I seem to have misplaced mine, I guess you get a pass.

I think this is the perfect name for what we see in the comic. I had the same reaction to it that you did: bouncing up and down giddily that it contained a lot of my favorite things. I know that drawing all of it again is probably one of the last things Otter wants to do right now, but Lincoln's meme collection would make great wallpaper! |
| Sorry, this is my first conspiracy so I'm a little slow. | |

This is exactly what I was trying to do. I am thrilled to hear that this was how you interpreted his gallery. Thank you! |

Over a year later, I surface to ask:![]() ...what's the deal with that rooster? Neither I nor any of my friends have any idea what it's from. |
