Reeeeally hoping the dog and lack of gag reflex are unrelated.
If you can't live without me, why aren't you dead yet?

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.

If I had to guess, it's so she doesn't throw up when she messes up. Mayhap that was a problem with her failed attempt?
Have you ever... Ever felt like this? How strange things happen, are you going Round the Twist

Good lord there are some wild emails this morning. I had to change the text in the strip.

Nobody else gags when they see something disgusting? I assumed that would be the unequivocal meaning for this strip, and not that Smithback wants her to blow a bunch of dogs.

There's science on it and everything!

Edited for clarity.

Seemed perfectly clear to me, though I admit to a minor double-take on first reading. Too many associations with the phrase "gag reflex" I guess.

I understood it, but I can definitely see why people made the mistake - Hope's line is circuitously constructed, before and after, which is not a bad thing, of course, but does require the reader to do a bit of work putting the pieces together. And "gag reflex" often pops up in coy references to oral sex.

Anyway, on the comic itself: this implies interesting things about healing. If the power were just telekinesis applied to the body (making bones reknit and so forth), medical training would presumably help. Needing to discard it implies there's some more mystical mind-body stuff going on.

Totally got the meaning from the start. Thing is, it took a second. Because, well, when my best friend in college told me his fiance had no gag reflex, I had to high-five him, and it wasn't because he found a woman who could totally keep from vomiting were we ever caught in a slasher flick.

I could totally see Hope phrasing it the original way on purpose, just to screw with people's heads for the lulz.

Hope did say something to the effect of
"Sloshing when she walked when she was thinking of Sparky".

So forgive me if my mind took me to the gutter.
The dogs thing did give me pause though.
I figured it would be clearer either after I had time to slowly re-read the strip and think about it for a bit or within a few days worth of strips.

Only tangentially related, but out of this mishap I am laughing my ass off. Did anyone else notice that in the Articlearticle Otter posted, the bookshop link on its right says the bestseller of the week is titled, "In Defense of Dogs"?
