Ooh... my guess: she wants finally to take Smithback up on developing her latent psychic powers, but specifically in order to help out their relationship (letting Pat see himself through her eyes and so forth).

You see, that's the sort of relationship-developing and relationship-maintaining addition to the story that makes this comic so unique. Never would've thought of using her latent psychic powers to boost his confidence in a billion years. It's that sort of imagination that adds so much depth to this comic. I kinda freaked at the notion this comic was going to be taken down in October if things didn't improve financially. I don't think I realized how much it meant to me until I thought that it might be gone.

If you're reading, thanks, Otter. Your work is inspirational in ways that I don't think I can properly articulate, which either means I'm a terrible writer (probably) or drunk enough to be getting mushy feely (definitely).

If you can't live without me, why aren't you dead yet?

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.

If God wants all the credit, he's getting all the blame.

It's just dramatic sparkle, like here.

Hmm...how literal is the remark in the alt text? Does a psychic form an especially strong connection during healing?

I've also wondered how being an empath affects your ability to fight. On the one hand, being able to read your opponent (spider sense and all that) is quite an advantage; on the other hand, getting extra emotional feedback from your successes (= your opponent's failures) could be disorienting. I guess Hope has gotten good enough to know exactly how much she needs to do to win, and how to not exceed that amount...

Interesting question. One view of that might be John Coffey (like the drink, only not spelled the same) from The Green Mile. He is a severe case though.

A great movie, see it if you haven't. And not the cut up version you get on TV. I've seen it both ways and it matters for this one I think.

Another even more severe case is Elva in Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle.

A good question, but remember that Hope has been deliberately avoiding developing her empathic/ESP/mutant freak abilities for the five years since she learned they existed. Spider-sense only - see this strip.

It's all gotta come down to not how much you can read but how much you can screen out.
That to me seems harder. Takes real control to not let "the noise" in.

Hope is smart, Hope is skilled. She can train, she can learn. But can she concentrate and control. I think she is more impulsive than that.

Maybe that's part of why she doesn't want to go down that road.

Call my a cynic - but I think they are visiting Smithbank because Otter got bored of drawing black eyes :)
