EDIT: ARGH, apologies. I bumped post before filling in the Topic Description field, and it won't let me edit that part. :( I'm so sorry guys.

Original Post:
Okay, I had to come post about this strip because I couldn't believe it, but it's almost impossible NOT to recognize it if you've read the book...

Mike is reading Fifty Shades of Grey. *facepalm* I was just so surprised that Otter would use that particular book cover, especially for Mike, so it really surprised me and made me giggle. Anyone else catch that?

Also....I was a bit confused, does anyone else know why Hope says "Maybe Burke still thinks the cyborgs grabbed her," after talking about being lucky with Clarice? I'm not really sure how the whole Burke thing ties in with Clarice and all that.

I mean....Burke got owned by a ghost, basically. How would it be lucky for her to think it was the cyborgs, considering the bad reputation Pat & the others already have? It's not like anyone would believe her about ghosts, so I'm really confused about that part.

P.S. We love you Otter for being such an amazing writer, artist, and in-general providing us with awesomey goodness. I've spent the last few days arguing with myself about whether or not I should spend half of what is left in my bank account on the Digital Divide or not. >.> I think I should, but the tiny, responsible adult part of my brain is screaming "BE PATIENT YOU IMBECILE! You can wait awhile!"

I think it would still be bad if Burke were telling everyone who'll listen that she was grabbed by invisible hands - she might not be believed by and large, but there are probably lots of people and organizations trying to learn as much about the agents as possible, and that would put them one step closer to learning about the ghosts.

(Probably why this was Plan 8 - it's risky.)

What surprises me the most is that in a world with highly sophisticated network systems, Hope's hospital is still using paper-based medical records. I wouldn't expect "Minority Report" stuff necessarily, but at least a laptop or smart pad. ;)

As for Burke, we'll just have to see if she's the "That can't have happened - I must repress the memory" type, or the "Something very real happened to me, and I will Pursue the Truth" kind of person.

Welcome BethMit!

Paper lives on (but is supposed to be going away real soon now).

I've taken 2 people to 2 different hospitals in the past week. Paper lives on.

One hospital said they were "going all electronic" this Fall.

My Dentist's office (a University based clinic) just swapped over July 1st. But still had me fill out a new paper form they then entered into the new system!

Hi Matdredalia,

I gave you a topic of "50 Shades of Mike".

Look at your post in the top right corner where it says "post #1".

Above that you should see (I think) "Edit Topic Title". Try that to edit "Topic" and "Title".

So it looks like Mike is currently a patient at the hospital. Is he ill, or have I suffered from catastrophic cerebral flatulence and utterly forgotten what sent him to the hospital in the first place?
If you can't live without me, why aren't you dead yet?

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.

If God wants all the credit, he's getting all the blame.

Clarice tasered Mike and his bare feet back on 20 Feb 2012, also known as yesterday in comic time I think.

Thanks very much, hon. I actually tried that button originally but it said I didn't have the permissions necessary to edit the topic. :?:

And about the whole hospitals and paper mess...I can't speak for the rest of the world, but.... I live in a really rural area, but most of our medical facilities are in the "city" about 45 minutes away. The place is a college town & retirement community with a TON OF MONEY floating around, and yet they still haven't gotten even remotely close to going digital. A LOT of paper lives on up there. I cringe whenever they pull out my file at my Doctor's office. It's about four or five inches thick, and that's just from the past three years. =/ I can't even imagine how many trees my doctor's office alone could save from swapping to tablets. =/

One of the wonders of the US health care system! In other sectors, business naturally get profits for being more efficient; doctors and hospitals, on the other hand, still get compensated largely based on their volume of care - well, there are various compensation methods, but almost none of them result in financial reward for giving better care for less money.

So in most of the economy, computerization was pretty quick, because its benefits were obvious, but in health care, electronic health record systems were a huge expense that wouldn't pay for itself, even though the benefits to patients are obvious, so we still limp along with paper mostly. (Some practices put in EHR and then dismantled them later!)

The 2009 economic stimulus included EHR incentive payments to help turn that equation around, and based on what I know, Real Soon Now might actually be true this time, but it's still going slow, slow.

My grandson's pediatricians (a well-established practice, my thirtysomething kids were their patients at the appropriate ages) still use paper.

My endocrinologist, on the other hand, uses a laptop. And then prints stuff out from it.

Sometimes paper is just more convenient.

The idea that Burke is an "innocent" confounds me.

She's been trying to get her coworker fired for incredibly petty reasons, doing incredibly stupid and obvious things in the process, at least one of which sure looked like it involved an absolute contempt for basic safety procedures.

That woman should not be allowed to work in a hospital. o_O

Bear in mind that Hope, Pat and Mike have been dealing with Clarice and the rogue ghosts. Compared to them, Burke is a little lamb.
