My first guess was that "numbat" was a made-up animal, a portmanteau of "wombat" and "numbnuts." I wouldn't have looked it up without the newspost. |

No, they are real Australian animals, marsupials of course, rather endangered at present. There's a family of them in _Doc Rat_. from which I posted the link to that panel. |
