mikeo,
it was never a tour,
it was just a make it up as you go along day really,
all we had planned to do was the gnarly ring,
haveing never been there we didnt know what to expect or how long it would take,
the rest was all just a bonus,
we all made decisions into where we went throughout the day,

I don't care, I just enjoyed the day, didn't have a clue where we were 99% of the time and I wasn't out in front

only downer was my cb playing up half the time couldnt hear a thing :(

was a great day from the weather point of veiw as well, even went swimming, although the current did get a little worrying on the way back as i was drifting away from the exit point :o

Dockyard and warships did cross my mind at one point......

We started near castle motors and took in a few familuar lanes before cutting back to have a look at Duloe, the decent down has really changed and was not as I remember it from last time.

from there we headed off to what is known as the pink pather by the locals or Gnarly ring by Gnarley laners, having seen it on you tube always wanted to have a go but had no idea where it was. So big thanks for Supersurf for getting us close not bad seeing as we didn't have the map.. final directions came from Wilky via the phone.

this was an entertaining lane going down with some nice steps to navigate... at one point Miss Evil had both Near side wheels clear of the ground.. hope someone caught it on camera i was to busy watching.

getting up this lane would be a whole differant ball game and i'm sure the Vits would struggle, although there is a clip on you tube of a vit going up :o

Maf and some of the GL's have made it up having seen it for myself now I'm not sure i would like to try it.. if you get it wrong reversing down is not going to be fun.

before this we took in a few more lanes and a couple where little crackers no idea where we were from this point on until we ended up at the lamehooe crossing, where the girls had some extra free entertainment... :o

with Supersurf not wanting to risk the alternator getting fried on the shogan it was left to me to test the water, getting over didn't appear to bad, although the water was flowing faster than i expected at a couple of points, i made it over and out.

it must have looked a bit differant from the watchers point of veiw as none of the others now wanted to cross, which ment i had a long drive round to catch back up or i had to recross...

the way back was somewhat differant as i must have been on a slighty differnt line, and started to get pushed down stream with not a lot of contact with the river bed at times  but the vit never let me down B) and finally we crawled out and back to the safety of solid ground.

I would say I was pushing the limits to get the vits over not so much the depth of water but the volume of water hitting the side really does push these lighter trucks making it difficult to maintain a line across.. still i have done it finally, having looked at it a few times now, at least I know know where the limit is and i won't cross it when its any deeper or if it looks faster flowing. HMS Vitara is not my idea of fun.

we finished off with a few more lanes on the way home and another little water splash through meavy.

so thanks to all for a brillant day i really did enjoy.

although I wasn't sure about Fozzy throwing his Pixie JUICE all over the place i'm sure it's normally dust

When Lee called for directions I didn't realise you were all out, I thought Lee, Fozz and Paul were GPS plotting for the Grand Master Map at Pixie HQ!!

MikeO, it must have been strange laning outside of South Devon?? :P

Spotting  , what was that all about, Si and I went down it the other day 1st time at dusk.. Now that was fun, couldn't spot each other as our trucks were to big to get out of!!

Up it next time...

So you enjoyed Lamerhooe then, fun at full flow isn't it.. I'm supprised the Vitara made it, when I went through a few months ago it was a struggle in the Pajero, mind you it was stupid deep and well fast!!! Pics somewhere on LTT!! I have since done it a few times, it's a walk in the park at half flow... The post and rail fence on the Devon bank is a good dept gauge, really you want to see the top 3/4x rails!! The day I did it only 1 was out of the water...

you always make it sound like thats all i do.

yes i have a comprehensive knowledge of south devon, also lower tamer valley and dartmoor maps,

also been to Wales, and Various places in Dorest, lambourne Downs, Salisbury plains etc

I don't mind very easy trips out in the lanes & showing new people some of the simple delights we have on our doorstep. damaging my truck or at least doing stuff that is likely to damage my truck on every trip is not my idea of fun, although with an experianced group i dont mind doing the more technical lanes from time to time.

I am very slow getting into laning in Cornwall, proving vehicular rights is not as striaght forward as Devon.

many ORPA's in Cornwall turn out to be footpaths and Bridleways, I have found a couple on my limited trips there already. getting hold of the definative map statements to check on rights i just dont have time for, so if you can prove it's legal you lead and i'll follow.

Anyone wanting to go up Gnarly ring... backing down if you fail is the least of your worries.

Blowing a diff, gearbox, prop, UJ etc, that is the real danger.

I said at the bottom that it could be the last lane the Cherokee (green) does, thankfully it did well, others have damaged their drivetrain on this lane, big time.

Myself and Boggy have done it and we spat waffle boards many times, I would not go up it again.

Don't forget a lane is not conquered until it's done in both directions, :tut:

MikeO,

I do realise this as you have told me before...

That was only one line within my post, I was more interested in your thoughts to Lanerhooe or The Ring??

Don't bite so hard!!

Anyway not worry...

Lamerhooe looked fun...

You should of come with us a few months ago, you would have come out at the Tamar Bridge...

The current was so strong and the tide so high it moved my truck around and the wall of water was so strong it stalled the shit box Disco!!!

Lamerhooe - easy if you create the perfect bow-wave keep the vehicle speed and revs right - notice how in the picture below the water is above the headlamps but below the sills of the truck. No danger of the water being taken in under the wheel arch either, although some vehicles air intake is right behind the bonnet slam panel! Speed can also help prevent the flow of the river deflecting the course you drive - all situations are different, dont do it unless you are confident of you and your vehicles capabilities - any one wants to have a go I can arrange a session for you. Split the cost by bringing another vehicle or two to share the session!

Hard to get a Bow wave when the wheels aint touching :o

Glad i had muds on think they acted like a paddle steamer at one point :P

but yea as Jim say "dont do it unless you are confident of you and your vehicles capabilities"

but then I was pushing the limits of the light weight Vit on this day and I wont do it if the river was higher or flowing faster than it was, defo found the Limit for the Vit on this day

:chicken:
